ROTARY CLUB OF NAIROBI LAUNCHES THE ONE MILLION TREE PLANTING PROJECT

1200 tress planted

By Rtn. Dorcas Otieno

The ‘Green Rotary One Million Tree Planting Project’ was successfully launched on Wednesday 1st April 2009 at Cheleta Primary School adjacent to Karura Forest. Approximately 1,200 trees were planted and a tree nursery bed established. The event was attended by Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Nairobi including President Ashok Shah, the District Governor Rotary D9200 Kaushik Manek, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), APA Insurance Limited, Kenya Organization for Environmental Education (KOEE), as well as students and teachers from Cheleta Primary School, Reuben Vision School, Britons Academy, Sicco Learning Centre, Niec Mission Centre, Maru Children’s Centre, and New Dawn, Jovial, and Jaombi Community Schools.

President Shah and DG Manek both reiterated their commitment to the One Million Tree Planting Project, and called for more partners to come on board to realise the objectives of the project. The Rotary Country Environment Officer, Rtn Dorcas Otieno, highlighted the need to conserve the environment while creating wealth to help alleviate poverty, in line with Rotary’s 2008-09 Theme of “Make Dreams Real”.

Joy Kelemba, the Deputy Director Department of Youth Training in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports lauded the initiative, likening it to the Ministry’s “Trees for Jobs” pilot programme, through which youth are encouraged to plant and nurture trees to earn a living. There were colourful songs, dances and poems by students and great energy by all who participated in planting trees in Cheleta Primary School. The students pledged to take care of the trees y watering them regularly.

The ‘Green Rotary One Million Tree Planting Project’ will address critical issues of sustainability in the conservation of forests and biodiversity protection in Kenya. The project will be implemented as part of the Green Rotary Environment Strategy by all Rotary Clubs in Kenya and other stakeholders. The Strategy aims at ensuring a healthy and wealthy environment for all, and enhancement of the quality of the environment through the demonstration and facilitation of sound environmental practices towards sustainable livelihoods and development.

Appreciation goes out to the RCN Fundraising Committee, RCN President Ashok Shah, DG Kaushik Manek, Mr Kiran Suthar of Highlands Mineral Water, Mr Jediel Maingi, KOEE among others whose financial and material contributions made the event a great success.
