...to launch a water project
Visit to the Masai Mara Last week, I sent you an email that Rotarian John Konchella, who is in charge of this project, will make a presentation on it. This will happen next week, on Thursday, 9th August 2007 during our regular meeting when there will be ample time to make a detailed presentation and to answer questions that you may have. Halima Shaiyah the Family of Rotary Director will however contact you shortly with the full package and how you can pay for the visit. As I informed you earlier, this is a wonderful service project and fellowship event which we shuld all participate in.

Masai Mara, Aug 17-19
Launch of Water Project in the Mara Visit to the Mara to launch a water project and thereafter witness the world famous Wildebeeste migration (17th to 19th August 2007)

John Konchellah and Family of Rotary Director Halima Shaiyah have completed preparations for this.

Purpose of the visit

i) We are going to launch a water project which we shall implement with the local community. This is an eminently worthy project with capacity to make a profound impact on the community. The promoter of this project, John Konchellah will address the members on it during our meeting of 2nd August 2007. As I earlier informed you, the local Community, through their own resources and the Constituency Development Fund, will raise more than 60% of the funds to finance it. Our contribution is about Kshs. 400,000/-, which is about 40% of the total cost of phase I of the project.

ii) After the launch on 17th August 2007, the Family of Rotary Committee Director, Halima Shaiyah and her committee have organised that all participating in this project proceed to the Masai Mara Game Reserve to watch the world famous Wildebeest Migration. August is the peak season for the migration. It is wonderful fellowship event and a get-away from the stress of modern living. There will be entertainment and game drives.

iii) We return on Sunday 19th August 2007 late in the afternoon.

ACCOMMODATION
We shall put up in tents in an excellent campsite. Each tent accomodates 2 people. All the hotels and lodges are full in this peak season.

Mode of Transport
We travel by tour vans. Each accomodates 6 people. You can also travel by air by Air Kenya.

Cost
The cost per person is Kshs. 28,500 full board (This was revised to give us excellent accommodation and game viewing facilites and comfortable means of transport).

For those who choose to travel by air, the cost is still Kshs. 28,500 plus an additional cost of US$221 for a return ticket. Those who travel by air will however not participate in the launch of the water project as the airstrip and the water project site are nearly 70km apart.

More information: any further information relevant to this project will be sent to you as soon as it becomes available.

Club Meeting Today, our spaeker is none other than our very own Honorary Member Dr. Mukesh Joshi.

This past weekend assisted by a team of 5 doctors along with the able hands and wisdom of that grand veteran of community service and especially eye camps PP Jerry Owuor, they managed to perform some 190 operations at Kisii Hema Hospital!

We are informed there were patients from as far as Homa Bay, Kericho and Kapsabet with older people in their sixties and even seventies braving the rains and distance for this service. And PP Jerry informs us for the first time they had Masais dressed in their colourful gab coming all the way from Kilgoris for the eye comps clearly illustrating the immense need of this worthy service.

See you all on Thursday.... back at the Grand Regency Hotel!

Club Meeting

Sergeant-at-Arms: Barbara Steenstrup

Event: As DHL hinted earlier in the week, our guest speaker next week is an enigma in the socio-political realm in Kenya and maybe the region. He goes by many names but for now we will call him by his official title which is Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga the Member of Parliament for Langata.

Now, being the crowd puller that he is, we expect about 150 people or so. Thus, once again, we urge members to turn up early.

Event: This week we have a slightly packed agenda. Thus we will start early and the bell will ring at 12.50pm. Here is why:

We begin with 2 inductions.

Secondly, we have a brief presentation by Mr. Lee Bycel. Lee is a Senior Advisor, Global Strategy for the International Medical Corps (IMC). In addition, he moderates a variety of seminars for The Aspen Institute and the Federal Executive Institute.

Thirdly, we will have a newsflash! Friends, we will be honored to be the first to receive the latest opinion polling results in Kenya. With the impending general elections the season for opinion polling is here and Rotarian George Waititu the Steadman Group Managing Director will present the latest results and believe me it is BREAKING NEWS and we will be privileged to access the news even before the other 30 million Kenyans...

Event: Today, our fellowship will be at the KWS Members Club inside Nairobi National Park.

There will be a Citi Hoppa bus at the Grand Regency car park from 11.45am. It will depart at about 12.15pm. Please keep time so that the bus can beat the lunchtime traffic jams. For those driving it would be good to leave your offices a little bit earlier too.

For those who will stay after the meeting, we will get a chance to take a game drive and after 4.00pm we can visit our feline friends, the cheetahs, at the orphanage. We are told this will be just after they have been fed and would be in a good mood to be petted by Rotarians.

See you all tomorrow for what promises to be a day like no other for our club. And remember the secret word at the toll gate....ROTARY!

Guest Speaker: Our guest speaker is one of Kenya 's foremost diplomats. He was instrumental in the formation of the Somali Transition Government as Kenya 's Special Envoy for the Somalia Reconciliation Conference. He is the chair of the Eminent Persons of the Africa Peer Review Mechanism. He is the Chancellor of Egerton University among many other positions.

Still, his recent undertaking will be the subject of his topic. Ambassador Bethwel Kiplagat is the Chairman of the Committee of Eminent Persons on the Constitution Review Process. And that will be the subject of his topic. The Constitution.

So good people, once again, let's amass ourselves and hear the good envoy discourse about his experience on this contentious issue of our time.

Club Meeting Speaker: Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka. According to recent opinion polls our guest speaker came in second as a favourite presidential candidate. And good old Mike Eldon informs us that he is a former member of the Rotaract Club of Nairobi Central (which we sponsor) and later, the Rotary Club of Nairobi.

Fellow Rotarians, our guest speaker this week is LDP leading luminary and presidential candidate Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka. He will be speaking on the current political environment in Kenya. And yesterday's by-elections are not only a pointer on our political environment but fodder for his talk!

So, lets all attend in large numbers along with our friends, colleagues, et al and hear Hon. Musyoka.
