RALLY FOR THE DISABLED' ON MARCH 28, 2009 WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!

A day of fun, food and laughter for more than 1700 special children

By Rtn. Chris Knochenhauer

This year's 'Rally for the Disabled' took place on Saturday, March 28th, 2009 at the Jamhuri Showgrounds in Nairobi. More than 1700 children from various schools in the country came together for a day of fun, laughter, food and drink.

The rally is a yearly event organized by Rotary Clubs in and around Nairobi under the leadership of the RC of Nairobi. This year, the RCs of Nairobi, Thika and Machakos participated in the organisation under the guidance of president Ashok Shah and Rtn. Nazir Jadavdji (both RC of Nairobi).

And what an event they created! Besides food and fun, the highlights were performances by Kenyan wrapper celebrity Jua Kali and comedian Nyambane.

Thanks again to organisers, sponsors, performers, volunteers (Rotarians, Rotaractors and friends), participating schools, their teachers and helpers and of course to the many enthusiastic kids who made this event a success!!

Here are some of the comments we received after the event:

"It was one hell of a performance by your team and the Rotary Clubs of Nairobi, Thika and Machakos. Over 1700 children had great fun. The highlight was Jua Cali who performed come rain or shine and the children did not worry about the rain when they were following him around the arena. Nyambane then closed the afternoon again dancing in the rain. Tremendous stuff!"
- Rtn. Ashok Shah, president RC Nairobi

"It truly was an enjoyable day and the kids seemed to have a great time."
- Rtn. Judie Mbogua, RC Muthaiga

"Hello, the headteacher, staff, parents and pupils of Salama Special Unit express their sincere gratitude to Rotary for hosting the rally. Thanks and God bless you."
- Mr Muriuki, Salama Special School

"What an excellent arrangement and the setting! The rally is the day the disabled members of our society look forward to. I call it a day when the Rotarians have a time to see what difference it can make in the life of a disabled child. When Nazir [the chairman of the organizing committee. Ed] told me that it was his first attendance, I saw tears of joy in his eyes. We take it so much for granted. Congratulations to you and Nazir and all others who worked to stage this function to become an enjoyable for those who can not help them self."
- Rtn. Manu Chandaria, RC Nairobi

"Excellent Rally and made me proud to be a Rotarian.....we made a special day for those who are most of the time marginalised in our midst. Nazir, you made it possible with your leadership. Special thanks to your team. Once again congratulations for a successful event of this Rotary Year!"
- PDG Mohamed Abdulla

"Yes great show - big hands to you all, the team that put it together!"
- Rtn Sally Gitoho, secretary RC Nairobi

"I WISH TO ADD MY VOICE TO COMMEND ALL THOSE WHO ORGANIZED THE RALLY FOR THE DISABLED ON SATURDAY. I WAS DELIGHTED TO SEE THE GOVERNOR AND MANU CHANDARIA AND OTHER ROTARIANS JOINING THE CHILDREN IN A JIG TO SHARE THE JOY. THEY SAY THERE IS MORE JOY IN GIVING THAN RECEIVING. IT WAS A DELIGHT TO WATCH ALL THOSE ROTARIANS AND ROTARACTERS ANIMATEDLY CARRYING LOADS OF SCONES AND OTHER EDIBLES AND SUPPLYING TO THE CHILDREN. IT WAS INDEED A DAY TO REMEMBER. THE VENUE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BRANDED WITH ALL PARTICIPATING CLUBS BANNERS TO AMPLIFY THE ROTARY DIVERSITY AND SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES. KUDOS NAZIR AND ALL THE CLUBS THAT TOOK PART!"
- RTN. ROBERT KINYUA, PRESIDENT RC NAIROBI PARKLANDS
